Budapest, May 13th, 2026 – Two electric Ikarus 80e midi buses have entered service in Greece, operating in the metropolitan area of Athens. The introduction of these vehicles marks not only another significant milestone in the export activities of the Hungarian bus manufacturer, but also the continuation of a historic relationship — the Ikarus name played a defining role in Greek public transport for decades.
Vehicle specifications and passenger comfort
The newly deployed Ikarus 80e electric midi buses are fully low-floor, step-free accessible vehicles with a passenger capacity of 60. Developed specifically for urban transport environments, the model delivers an enhanced travel experience through a modern passenger information system, heat pump-based air conditioning, and USB charging ports available at every seat.
Depending on operating conditions, the buses achieve a range of 250–300 kilometres on a single charge, with a top speed of 70 km/h. The vehicles are equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including lane departure warning, forward collision warning, safe following distance monitoring, and pedestrian detection.
A historic relationship renewed
Ikarus buses became particularly well-known in Greece during the 1970s and 1980s. Historical records indicate that more than one thousand Ikarus 260 buses entered service in the country between 1978 and 1985, primarily within the Athens public transport network. Renowned for their reliability and ease of operation, the model earned widespread trust among Greek operators, and Ikarus buses went on to play a defining role in urban mobility across Greece for many years.
Building trust in international markets
Following the delivery of these initial vehicles, negotiations regarding further orders have already commenced. This development reflects that Ikarus vehicles are meeting operational expectations in practice and that the manufacturer is building growing confidence among international partners and operators.
